Call for people to attend Crediton Climate Rally

by Alan Quick

SUSTAINABLE Crediton would like as many people as possible to attend an event in Crediton Town Square on November 28, from 10am to 12 noon.

The event will be in support of a global climate rally to coincide with the global Paris climate talks which starts on November 29.

Sustainable Crediton hope to get hundreds of people into the Town Square to make energy efficiency/lifestyle, etc, pledges which will be bundled up and given to Mel Stride, the MP for Central Devon, to give to the Prime Minister, David Cameron.

It is hoped that there will be a photograph taken of the crowd in the shape of a heart, displaying their pledges, which will include signing to say: “I want a strong global agreement at the 2015 United Nationals Climate Change Conference”.

This photo will then be sent to Avaaz, the campaigning community bringing people-powered politics to decision makers worldwide, in support of their campaign to get the world’s governments to commit to a strong climate deal in Paris.

There will be an opportunity, with hot cider, apple juice and music, to proclaim what people are doing to live within the resources of One Planet.

Sustainable Crediton is contacting schools, businesses and individuals to advertise what they are doing to combat climate change by writing their action and commitments on green hearts.

“Everyone is invited to take part at the Town Square and be photographed in a large heart-shaped figure at 11.45am,” says Sarah Green, Chair of Sustainable Crediton,

Member Laura Conyngham is appealing for people to take along evidence of “green” actions.

She said: “For businesses, evidence might be a copy of a reduced fuel bill or a photograph of solar panels on your factory roof. As individuals we might include bus and train tickets, a photo of ourselves eating locally grown food, or dressed in second-hand clothing or on holiday without air miles.”

Chosen evidence can be attached to your green heart and brought to the Town Square to be sent off in Crediton Climate Challenge’s special mail bag to Mel Stride.

Or your commitment can be written on your green heart while you drink a cup of coffee, or any of the other drinks on offer in the Town Square, that morning.

Music from “The Woodman” starts at 10.15am gathering momentum with the Town Crier, stalls, speeches, displays, cake, commitments, graffiti and activities for children, until the big photo is taken in the Square at 11.45am.

The band set will include John Lennon’s "Give Peace a Chance" but using the words "Give Earth a Chance".
