A MID Devon resident organised her own "Stop the Bill" protest in Crediton over the Easter weekend.
She was protesting against a new Bill giving police sweeping powers, including to shut down protests, which is currently going through Parliament.
She placed notices at St Lawrence Green and in Crediton Town Square.
The resident told the "Courier": "This bill is one in a long line of examples of the Government imposing legislation that takes away our fundamental rights.
"Our right to peacefully protest, the rights of Traveller communities to live a nomadic life and the right to access and enjoy the countryside around us.
"Protesting is seen as a city activity, not one that happens much out here in rural Mid Devon.
"I wanted to show that there are passionate people in the sticks too, that we want our voices to be heard as well.
"It’s easy to dismiss the protests in Bristol as completely separate from us, but the reality is that this bill, and many other nasty pieces of legislation and policy from the Government, will affect us all.
"I am protesting in Crediton to raise awareness, to show solidarity with those protesting in cities, to encourage others in rural Mid Devon to stand against this bill, and make sure generations after us keep the fundamental rights we’ve enjoyed our whole lives."
