ELEVEN people who have gone “above and beyond in their churches, schools, communities and overseas to serve others” have been recognised in the yearly St Boniface awards.

This year’s recipients were Caroline Adams of St James’ Church in Exeter; Julia Beaman of St Paul’s in Honiton; Carolyn Bull of St Michael’s in Alphington; Nick Brown of St Mary the Virgin in Churston Ferrers; Mary Casey of St Gregory’s in Seaton; Katie Drew of the Melanesian Mission; Irene Hicks of St Peter’s in Lamerton; Angela Hulme of St Mary Magdalene in South Molton; Caitlin James of St Luke’s School in Exeter; David Netherway of St James’ in Swimbridge; and Fred Webb of St John the Baptist in Marldon.

The Bishop of Exeter gave the group medals and admitted them to the Company of St Boniface in a service at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday, June 7.

Established in 2019, the awards are named after Devon’s patron saint, who was born in Crediton.

They are open to lay people who are worshipping members of an Anglican church in the Diocese of Exeter, but not diocesan employees. They are also open to staff, volunteers and governors of Church of England schools in the diocese.

The awards are now in their fifth year, and 2025 is the first year the new Bishop of Exeter, the Rt Rev Dr Mike Harrison, has overseen them.

“All the recipients have varied stories but what they have in common is generosity towards others,” said Bishop Mike.

“They have realised that it is not about solemn duty, it is what we were born for and called to. It is the greatest opportunity and fulfilment.

“Thanks be to God for this people, these excellent exemplars who inspire, delight and instruct us.”

Nominations for the 2026 St Boniface awards will open in January.
