SIX fire appliances from Danes Castle (Exeter), Tiverton, Cullompton, Middlemoor (Exeter), Crediton, and Topsham attended a thatched property at Fore Street, Silverton, during the afternoon of Saturday, February 23, after the occupant reported a fire in one of the bedrooms.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said that the number of appliances sent was as a result of Fire Control establishing at the time of call that this was a thatched property, and whilst the thatch was not on fire, the attendance was a precaution, should the fire have spread.

The Fire Service said that within minutes of the first crews arriving and investigating, the crews had located the small fire in the upstairs bedroom, and quickly had it contained and under control, confirming no fire spread to the thatched roof.

Crews set to work extinguishing the fire using hose reel jets, whilst other crews checked the internal roof space with thermal imaging cameras.

Once satisfied there was no fire spread some of the oncoming appliances were stood down, as not required.

This incident was reported at 12.25pm and was brought under control by 1.06pm.

The cause was confirmed as accidental, following an electrical fault in a hairdryer.

A gentleman in his 70s was treated on scene by fire service personal for slight smoke inhalation, but after being checked over by Ambulance paramedics, was not required to go to hospital.

The room of origin sustained fire, smoke and heat damage but there was no other significant damage to the remainder of the property.
