NEARLY 50 ploughmen and women from across the South West attended the 74th annual Cheriton Fitzpaine and District Ploughing Association match at Lower Living Farm, Shobrooke on a lovely sunny Sunday.

There were four teams of horses to watch as they ploughed as well as the field roots, hay, silage and corn classes plus the excellence of entries in the fruit and vegetable show.

Champion ploughman again this year was Roland Glanville of St Columb, Cornwall. Susan Lewis from Stockleigh Pomeroy won the trophy for the best exhibit in the flower and vegetable classes with her five tomatoes.

Before the presentation of awards, chairman James Lee of Uppincott, Shobrooke, introduced the Rev Kingsley Cross, Priest in Charge of North Creedy East who lives at Cheriton Fitzpaine, to Bless the Plough.

This was a large Maschio Unico M five-furrow plough supplied by Optico UK based in Lincolnshire with a Case Puma CVX tractor from James Pryce Tractors demonstrated by Dominic Burt from Maschio who lives in Exeter.

James Lee thanked their hosts, Mr and Mrs G Kerslake and Mr and Mrs Rory Knight Bruce, and wished “good luck” to local man Donald Tonkin who was ploughing for England.
