MORCHARD Bishop will be playing its part in “Battle’s Over”, an international commemoration to mark 100 years since the guns fell silent at the end of World War One, on Sunday, November 11.
Events will begin at the War Memorial with a Remembrance Service at 10.50am which will include a two minutes’ silence at 11am.
Starting at 6pm, a joint service with Emmanuel Church will take place at St Mary’s Church. There will be no sermon but there will be some First World War Poets readings appropriate to the occasion.
Following the service everyone will gather in the playground of the Primary School, opposite.
At 6.55pm “The Last Post” will sound. One thousand buglers will also sound this historic tribute at WWI Beacons of Light locations across the Nation and UK Overseas Territories.
At 7pm, to coincide with more than 1,000 beacons of light being lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, the lighting of the beacon at Morchard Bishop Church Tower will take place.
This will symbolise an end to the darkness of war and a return to the light of peace - a century after the guns fell silent.
Following this there will be wine and soft drinks served in the school playground.
At 7.05pm the church bells will Ring out for Peace, part of 1,000 cathedral and church bells across the nation and beyond, in celebration of Peace.
Also at 7.05pm, 100 town criers throughout the UK and other countries around the world will join together to perform “Cry for Peace Around the World”.
