SANDFORD Flower Show can only be described as a tremendous success and congratulations go to Tony Wright and his team for their hard work.
The Cups and trophies were presented by the Chairman of Sandford Parish Council, Elizabeth Dalton. Top awards went to John Crook, who won the J Crooke Perpetual Cup for having the greatest number of points in Flower, Fruit and Vegetable classes.
John also won the Committee Perpetual Cup for most points in the Flower Classes, the gift voucher for the Best Exhibit which was a colourful dahlia, the Friendship Cup for the Sandford Show Vase and finally a gift voucher for his Zinnias.
Dave Friendship also took top awards winning the Nick Cann Perpetual Cup for most points in the vegetable and fruit classes and his wife, Doris, won the Lionel Parish Shield for the Best Pot Plant - a magnificent specimen.
Dave also took home the Meadowside Garage Perpetual Cup for his giant pumpkin weighing around half a cwt. He also received the Garden News Shield for having the greatest number of points in the vegetable and flower section for those living in the Parish, plus a gift voucher for his tomatoes.
Both John and Dave also won gift vouchers with their trophies.
FLORAL ENTRIES
This year there were a record number of entries in the floral art classes and the Perpetual Shield for most points was won by Elaine Stanlake, with the L Allin Perpetual Silver Cup going to Nicky Barnes for the Best exhibit.
Angela Hawkins won the WI Rose Bowl for the most points in the cookery classes and Hazel Cheriton took home the H Pennington Cup in the homecraft section.
The Photography section was well-supported and the Margaret Tucker Shield for the best photograph went to Roy Oliver with the Somerville Cup being won by Richard Burston for the most points. They also all won gift vouchers.
In the children’s section Cassius Evens, won the Sherwood Cup and his brother, Marley, won both the Margaret Tucker and Sherwood Cups for most points in the children’s classes.
The Judges were Bill Crout (vegetables), Bert Jewell (flowers), Mo Turner (floral art), Angela Searle and Margaret Harris (cookery), Pat Sherwood (handicrafts) and Mr and Mrs Michael Elliot (photographs).
Other first and second prize winners were: Cookery - Hazel Cheriton, Helen Lee, Nigel Paul, Rita King (eggs) Angela Hawkins and Victoria Boxall-Hunt. Handicrafts - Diane Edworthy, Sheila Whitehead, Elaine Stanlake and Ronald Somerville. Floral Art - Jill Burst0n, Andrew Dean, Ann Nixon, Fred Maddock. Arrangement of flowers grown in own garden - Nicky Barnes. Fruit and vegetables - Dave Friendship, Rita King, Dodie Huxter, John Crook, Andrew Dean and Margaret Phillips (blackberries). Flowers - Christine Balsdon, Margaret Tucker, Andrew Dean, Simone Romaine, Mary-Rose Somerville and Ann Nixon. Odd shaped vegetables - Tilly Hope. Longest runner bean - Dave Friendship. Children’s winners - Jemina Tapp, Matilda Paul, Molly Tapp, Eliza Stephens, Cassius and Marley Evens.
Congratulations to everyone who took part and to the ladies in the kitchen who worked very hard throughout the afternoon. There was also an excellent raffle.
