CONTRARY to the view of one of your correspondents last week, political rants in public are generally accepted as part of the colour and passion of election campaigns. How boring are the usual "grey" politicians who just mouth platitudes and never answer the question? Would he also agree that anonymous, obscene and violent threats sent by cowards to political opponents in Crediton be condemned, too? Several residents of Crediton, who are not members of the Labour, Liberal or Green parties, have received violent and obscene threats to their lives - anonymously - which the Police are treating as serious crimes. If anybody should receive such a letter, inform the police at once and place the letter in a plastic bag. Unfortunately, and unrelatedly, this occurred just after the recent election, when local people were harassed on social media sites, when poster sites belonging to private individuals, including disabled residents, were sprayed with obscene graffiti and covered over with their own political party posters (not very sustainable or environmental). One such political party posted photographs of such vandalism on their pages, asking people to "like" them. I would hope that all leaders and members of all political parties who contested the recent elections locally will condemn these acts and agree that sick, psychopathic attempts to create a climate of fear in Crediton will be counter-productive and will rebound on the genuinely, decent supporters of political groups, whom we all respect in a civilised democracy and free society. I would like to put my name to this letter, but have been advised not to because of further reprisals: however, I have supplied my name and address to the Editor. Without prejudice.
