PLANNING permission has been given to convert a former barn attached to a Grade II listed house in Morchard Bishop into a one-bedroom holiday let.

The barn, which is connected to the early 19th-century Park House on Fore Street, is “curtilage listed”, i.e. it is legally protected by the same heritage rules as the main building.

Ms K Bray can now repair the outside of the building, have new windows and doors, and install solar panels on the roof.

Downstairs, the barn can have a bedroom, en-suite bathroom and utility room. Upstairs, it will be able to have an open-plan kitchen, living and dining room.

“The application demonstrates that the proposal would achieve a tourism offer that utilises an otherwise redundant historic building within the defined settlement of Morchard Bishop,” said Mid Devon District Council, approving the plans.

“By reason of its scale, design and materials, the development is considered to be acceptable, which relates to the character and appearance of the existing site and its surrounding area.

“Furthermore, there will be no unacceptable impact on neighbouring living conditions as a result of the proposed development, no adverse impact on highway safety, on ecological interests, heritage assets and flood risk or drainage issues.

“Conditions have been imposed to ensure potential impacts upon the setting and significance of the listed building are reduced, and to ensure any impacts upon features of special architectural or historic interest are minimised.”
