FOLLOWING a public survey aimed at the local community and trade, the people of Crediton have made it quite clear that they DO NOT want another Food retailer to move into the old Costcutters store at 135 High Street, Crediton.

Instead, the people are very much in support of the New Proposal for a multi-use centre that would house a pannier style market, children's activities and an events centre under a Social Enterprise scheme.

As the survey continues, in excess of 120 signatures have been collected from trade and public, of which, to date, only one has shown wishes for another supermarket to open.

As expected, there have been one or two concerns by local businesses that new enterprises may come in direct competition with theirs but, those who took part in the survey are assured that the intention is to bring new ideas along with attractive opportunities for all.

Funding is also being explored a number of sources and the plan for the multi-use centre, with news of community sentiment has now been put forward to The Town Council.

Once again, the agents for the freeholders of the building have been contacted.

It will be our intention to approach the freeholders for an improved more practical lease package in the future.

If you would like to support or disagree with the new proposals then please do go along to the Once Read Bookshop and offer your signature and comments.

Some comments from the community have included:

Crediton needs to establish its own identity, which it will not do by letting High Street shops to supermarkets, solicitors etc. More small units with their own identity could make Crediton a town that people will want to visit.

A brilliant idea – would invigorate the town and give it and individual character that would attract visitors to the area.
