A THUNDERSTORM over Crediton which reached a peak at about 3pm today, August 15, has caused flooding at town offices, homes and a pub.

North Street in Crediton saw homes and offices under between six and eight inches of water, running off Crediton’s Town Square and down North Street.

Carpets have been ruined in one office, reaching all three rooms and homes also sustained damage.

The Wetherspoons public house, the General Sir Redvers Buller, suffered from flooding.

The water entered the back of the property via the garden steps and conservatory into the bar area.

It was immediately closed and is due to re-open when mopping up has been completed.  No time has been given for the re-opening.

Sandbags were placed outside some offices in Crediton High Street and it is believed that this stopped further properties flooding.

The entrance hallway to flats in Market Square House was flooded to a depth of several inches and residents worked hard to clear the water.

A property in Exeter Road, Crediton also sustained some flooding.

Some localised power cuts have been reported with a local lightening strike also reported.

There are also reports that the road was impassible to motorists between the bottom of Spruce Park and Barnfield Hill as one person explained: “big chunks of the road were breaking up due to the force of water!  Please find alternative route for now!”

A Met Office Amber warning for flooding is valid for this evening.
