LETTER

AS I walked to work along Crediton High Street this morning, the contractors had started to drill for the road works.

All the workers around the drills were wearing ear protection, understandably as the noise was deafening and prolonged exposure to that level of noise would damage their hearing.

However, they are drilling immediately outside the shops, Oliver’s Bakery, Boots, etc and the staff in there, barely a few yards further from the drilling than the road workers, have no protection and have no means of escaping from the noise.

I believe the noise levels in the shops is unacceptable, likely to be injurious to health and is an urgent matter for Environmental Health. The levels of noise within the shops should be measured as a matter of urgency.

I readily accept that the road works must take place, but the Health and Safety of those working in the High Street, as well as those who are carrying out the works, should be paramount.

I have also emailed Environmental Health in Tiverton.

Please treat this matter with the utmost urgency, for once the damage is done to people’s hearing, there is no turning the clock back.
