MEMBERS of Newton St Cyres Art Group enjoyed a watercolour demonstration by Rob Dudley, entitled “Reflections” at their September meeting.

Rob kindly stepped in at short notice to show us a range of techniques he uses when painting reflections.

While painting a beautiful watercolour of a river, its sunlit banks, and a bridge, he passed on many useful tips, advising us to sketch outdoors as often as possible, to develop observational skills; handle paintbrushes sensitively, and allow the paint to do its own thing without too much interference; stretch the paper, and keep it wet so that colours can move and blend, and not to spend a fortune on a range of expensive brushes, as good quality ones can be found which cost less.

He recommended incorporating a wide range of tones, from very dark to white, for maximum impact. He uses vibrant transparent colours to contrast with dark areas.

The combination of his talent, relaxed manner and good sense of humour meant the evening passed easily and we gathered eagerly round the finished painting for a closer look.
