A UK-wide test of the government’s Emergency Alerts system will take place on September 7 at 3pm.
The alert will be sent to all compatible 4G and 5G phones and tablets. It will include a loud, siren-like sound and a vibration lasting several seconds.
This is a scheduled test to ensure the system works properly. You do not need to take any action.
The Emergency Alerts system was first tested nationally in April 2023.
Alerts are designed to warn people quickly in the event of a life-threatening emergency.
The test is not a cause for concern and will not indicate any real danger. The alert will end automatically after a few seconds.
Alerts are designed to be accessible, with audio and vibration cues for people with vision or hearing impairments.
OPTING OUT OF ALERTS
You can opt out of emergency alerts, including the national test. This may be necessary for some, such as people with a concealed phone for safety reasons.
To opt out, go to your phone’s settings.
On iPhones, visit the “Notifications” menu.
On Android devices, search for “Emergency Alerts” and turn off the options shown.
More detailed guidance is available depending on your device model. It is recommended that most users keep alerts enabled for safety.
ACCESSIBLE INFORMATION
Details about the test are available in British Sign Language (BSL) and Easy Read formats via the GOV.UK website.
