THE imagination of local children has been brought to life in the newly launched Mid Devon Monster Book, a unique community project created through Kick Start Art, a free creative initiative run by retired teacher, Linda Williamson and supported by the Crediton Heart Project.
Children from schools across Mid Devon were invited to invent their own monsters and imagine where they might live in familiar local places.
The result is a colourful collection of characters hiding in parks, woods, rivers, rooftops, village landmarks and other well-known locations throughout the area.

From mischievous cupboard-dwelling creatures and mysterious river monsters to friendly woodland characters and rooftop spies, each monster reflects the creativity and humour of the children who designed them.
As well as celebrating the children’s artwork, the book encourages families to explore local places and see their communities through fresh eyes. Readers can discover monsters hidden in locations across Crediton and the surrounding villages while learning about the places that inspired them.
Kick Start Art was established to provide free creative opportunities for children and families across Mid Devon.
Through community art projects, exhibitions and competitions, it aims to encourage creativity, build confidence and bring people together through art. Participation is completely free, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to get involved.
The Mid Devon Monster Book is available for £3.50 from Karen Gutans Art, The Bookery and Crediton Library.
Kick Start Art is very grateful for their support. The project team would also like to thank Hedgerow Print in Crediton for helping transform the children’s monster creations into a book that can be enjoyed by families across Mid Devon.
