TROPHIES were this week presented to those who have the prettiest gardens in the town.

Cllr Frank Letch, the Mayor of Crediton, announced the results of the 2012 Crediton Town Council Floral Crediton competition and trophies were presented by the vice-chairman, Cllr Joyce Harris and judge, Bert Jewell.

Mr Letch said he was delighted there were 36 entries in the six classes this year.

He said: "The number of entries is going up every year, which is a good sign.

"We also had a local professional gardener, an RHS qualified judge, this year, too."

Mr Letch said that his favourite garden was at Yeoland House, Barnfield, owned by Brian and Mary Threlfell, and presented the couple with the Mayor's Favourite trophy.

Best Formal Large Garden - 1 Yeoland House, Barnfield; 2 Jan Martin, 5 Lake View; 3 Sally Endacot-Phillips and Graham Woodman, 9 Lame Johns Field.

Best Kept Garden - 1 Marion and Ron Stevens, 27 Cromwells Meadow; 2 Mrs J Smith, 16 Blagdon Rise; 3 Ann Cann, 10 Golden Joy.

Best Natural Large Garden - 1 John and Celia Boyle, Fordton House; 2 Joe Vinnicombe, Bethany, Alexandra Road; 3 Mr and Mrs Hopper, 2 Alexandra Road.

Best Family Garden - 1 Judith and Dave Thistlewood, 31 Barnfield; 2 Nigel Garside, 3 Lynwood Terrace; 3 Peter Hamilton, 5 Union Terrace.

Best Commercial Display - 1 Hillbrow Care Home; 2 The Mitre; 3 Church View Car Sales.

Baskets and Containers - 1 Mrs Ali Courtney and Mr Baron Snell, 37 Barnfield; 2 Ted Staite, Karenside, Old Tiverton Road; 3 Norman Ponsford, Holly Tree House, 18 Park Street.
