I WAS pleased to see the letter from the Devon Bishops about Gaza.
However pleas to Israel for a ceasefire and peace are not enough since they do not carry enough weight and will not influence their behaviour.
We have seen that over the past 50 years or so.
Change came about in South Africa to a large extent as a result of a whole variety of external sanctions especially economic.
The church should be bold and describe what is going on in Gaza as genocide as the Quakers have done, along with many other organisations such as Amnesty International.
Also they should call for economic sanctions, at least on settlement goods but preferably on any goods from Israel.
This latter step is now being recommended by prominent Israelis themselves including a former attorney general and a former speaker of the Knesset (the Israeli
parliament) who are aghast at what is going on in Gaza.
I have written along these lines to our local MP.
And we can play our part in this by ensuring we don't buy goods made in Israel.
