THE sign is up. Our Council Offices are for Sale.

Once again, Mid Devon District Council is doing the dirty on Crediton.

Not content with removing its presence in town completely, it is now selling our Council office building in the Square.

Our town council has made representations to MDDC, firstly not to sell, and then to sell to Crediton at a reduced sum, using as its argument that it is an essential community asset, housing as it does not only the town council’s administrative centre, but also a community meeting place, an office space for the Community Transport, and facilities for the Citizens Advice.

Where will these services go if the building is sold?

With disabled access and right in the centre of town, it is an ideal site for this facility.

MDDC has disregarded these representations, despite the precedent set by them of selling Tiverton’s old offices for half price.

The price MDDC is asking is £250,000.

Crediton needs to buy this building for the community, but why should the Town Council pay full value, when MDDC was allowed to sell Tiverton’s for half price, in spite of a major refurbishment in 2009.

Once more we are reminded that Mid Devon District Council cares little for any community in Mid Devon outside Tiverton.

Our elected representatives on MDDC, who are obviously in the minority, have been ignored, but I understand that this decision rests with the Chief Executive of MDDC and not with the council members anyway, who seem powerless to stop it.

I urge all my friends to write to every MDDC member, and our MP, and the chief executive of MDDC, to try and save this beautiful building and its services in our lovely town square.
