THE Coronavirus is creating uncertainty in our daily lives, but I’m heartened by the certainty of community.
In a very short space of time, a local delivery hub has been set up in Crediton to help those in need get deliveries to their door (see: www.shopcrediton.co.uk).
Sandford Parish is co-ordinating volunteers and services to get supplies and connection to people who need it.
Crediton Congregational Church is offering “virtual” services, and hosts the food bank. And these are just a few of the things going on.
There is a quote I like, from Margaret Mead, that says: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
It reminds me that starting on our doorstep, and working in community, can provide inspiration, leadership and results. Of course, this needs to dovetail in with national efforts — but I like the idea of “rippling up” rather than “trickling down”.
I’ll be “rippling up” these local ideas and initiatives to Mid Devon District Council and beyond, in the hope that connection across our district keeps strengthening, and that we get the support we need from central government, now and in the future. Mid Devon officers are working tirelessly at the moment to ensure services continue to operate as far as is possible.
Meanwhile, it’s a shame (but understandable) that the Crediton Community event about the climate crisis that was due to take place on Saturday, March 28 has been cancelled.
Efforts to move Mid Devon to net zero carbon emissions continue though, including via online virtual meetings.
If anyone would like to think creatively with me about how to keep this agenda moving, please do get in touch: [email protected] .
Thanks for reading. And thank you for connection and community.
Cllr Elizabeth Wainwright
Mid Devon District Council
