NEWTON St Cyres Young Farmers’ Club has once again had another month packed full of activities.

Our “Farming Frenzy” theme carnival float has visited Okehampton carnival where it was awarded “Highly Commended”, South Zeal carnival achieving an amazing first place in the YFC comedy class and Hatherleigh where it was also awarded “Highly Commended”.

It is also great to report that members have been getting involved in this year’s speaking competitions.

A big congratulations goes to Katie Davie who at just 14-years-old, was awarded “Best Female Under 21 speaker” at the county final of “Just a Minute”.

On October 11, the Farmwise event was held at Westpoint Arena, near Exeter, where 1,200 primary school children gathered to learn more about farming in Devon and where their food comes from.

Keen to support this worthy cause, two of our members, Millie Murphy and Tom Lee, went along to help. I don’t think either of them has ever been asked so many questions.

At the end of October, the club held its 79th Annual Dinner and Dance at the Waie Inn, with guest speaker Nick Creasy, Devon YFC county organiser.

Nick gave a great speech on his Devon Revolution challenge to swim, cycle and run a total of 250 miles in just 48 hours, all in aid of the new Rural Hub at Cheriton Bishop. A fantastic evening was had by all.

If you’re interested in finding out more about YFC, feel free to come to along to their next club meeting on Tuesday, December 6, from 8pm at Newton St Cyres Parish Hall.
