REPRESENTATIVES of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) visited Crediton on Friday June 7 to publicise their "Keep Trade Local" national campaign which aims to highlight the plight of the shopping outlets around the UK.
The day began with a meeting at the Boniface Centre, Crediton with heads of local businesses before heading out to the High Street shops and offices.
The group were helped by local town councillors and also had a visit from MP for Central Devon Mel Stride. They later went to the town square to see the activities taking place as part of Crediton Falls Day.
The Town Council is supporting the campaign Cllr Frank Letch, Mayor of Crediton, told the Courier: "Crediton Town Council fully endorses any initiative that promotes local businesses and helps our High Street and industrial estate to flourish.
"The council has a policy of buying locally and using local craftsmen whenever possible.
"We also press the Mid Devon District Council planners to prioritise retail outlets when business premises fall vacant in the town."
He added: "A busy High Street means a flourishing town."
Susan Wilkinson, from the Federation of Small Businesses, said: "Sadly, the case is that if we don't use our independent businesses, we will lose them.
MP Mel Stride added his support by saying, "This is a very positive campaign and I am very pleased to have been able to link up with the FSB who do so much to promote small businesses across the country.
"Crediton has a vibrant High Street retail offering and I strongly urge as many residents as possible to keep shopping locally to support their local traders."
Mr Stride also said that he thought there was a feeling of "cautious optimism" among business owners; with a number feeling that trade is beginning to pick up a little.
