AN illustrated talk on the Life and Letters of St Boniface of Crediton will be given by Judi Binks at Kennerleigh Church, on Thursday, June 19. Judi was awarded the Farmington Fellowship many years ago in recognition of her work as a teacher of Religious Education. She has been able to research the existing correspondence of St Boniface and his female companions from Wessex who revived Roman Christianity in the northern European areas of Saxony and Friesland. Judi explained: "I visited all the key places in Boniface's mission, including Fulda, Petersberg, Erfurt,Utrecht and Dokkum to see at first-hand the significant impact of his role in contemporary Germany and Netherlands. "I was also fortunate in spending a writing term at Bristol University with Professor's Ursula King and Diarmaid MacCulloch and with Dr Ralph Waller of the Farmington Insitute for Christian Studies at Harris Manchester College, Oxford University. "What I find fascinating about this locally born man known as Wynfrid is his complete dedication to the task and the thorough way he set about his mission. He openly supported women, such as Lioba, his niece, also from Wessex, placing them in positions of power as abbess and teacher, in the frontline of the beleagured conditions he faced in taking on the Old Saxon pagans and the failings of the older Christians who had become corrupted. "I am going to explore his work and writings in the context of Wessex and northern Europe against this background of strong and learned females." The presentation will be lively and Judi will use music and images to bring to life the story of St Boniface. The talk starts at 7pm and tickets are £5 to include refreshments of wine and cheese. For more information please contact Judi on 01363 866668. All proceeds raised from the evening will be in aid of Kennerleigh Church funds. Carol Furze
