MID Devon Scouts held its St George’s Day parade and presentations ceremony at Okehampton on Sunday, April 27.
Hundreds of young people and their families attended, members of Groups from Bow, Tedburn and Cheriton, Crediton, Chulmleigh, North Tawton, Okehampton, Holsworthy, Sandford, South Zeal and five District Explorers Units.


They gathered outside the main entrance to Okehampton College then, led by Okehampton Excelsior Silver Brass Band, walked around half of Simmonds Park, watched by a large number of people, for the salute to be taken at the Bandstand and then into the college Sports Hall.
The salute was taken by Okehampton Mayor Allenton Fisher, President of the Inner Wheel Mrs Jean Fisher, District Commissioner Trevor Waycott and Assistant DC Jo Pengelly.


Deputy District Leader Helen Derbyshire was Master of Ceremonies for the proceedings at the college which saw presentations and activities take place as well as the performance of an interactive play about St George and the Dragon by Okehampton Scouts.
There were also games for the youngsters including making dragons, St George’s swords and castles.
Promises were renewed and the Roll of Honour of names was displayed on a giant screen.


Holsworthy was the winner of the Best Turned Out Award.
Adult Volunteer Awards presented were: Chief Scout’s Commendation for Good Service: Sam Hollow, Karen Squire and Helen Olsson. Wood Beads: Howard Squire, John Dunning, Sawsan Khuri and Kirsty Wensley. Length of Service: Helen Olson - 10 years, Robin Thorpe - five years.


District Commissioner, Trevor Waycott thanked everyone for attending and also thanked those involved in organising and helping with the event, especially ADC Helen Derbyshire.
Mid Devon Scouts offer Scouting to all young people in the area, offering a vibrant, ambitious and confident programme for young people, offering them the skills that they need for life whilst having fun and adventure.
