FREE English Lessons in Crediton start with the new school year from September 7 in the Community Rooms of Crediton Fire Station, every Wednesday, from 7.30pm until 9pm, and every Thursday, from 10am until 11.30am, following school year terms.

Crediton International Social and Cultural Organisation (CISCO) started the lessons in May 2012 to help migrant workers and their families (as well as members of international families) in our area to improve their English knowledge and communication skill.

Since its creation in 2009 CISCO aims to support migrants in Crediton and the surrounding area in a practical way encouraging them not to oppose but to integrate into the host community.

Natalia Letch, English lessons’ administrator, said: “The majority of problems migrants face come from their lack of experience of British social and cultural traditions.

“The key factor in the integrating journey is the English language, of course.

“I remember myself 10 years ago coming to the UK with a vocabulary of 10 English words. Well, it was quite funny to feel deaf and dumb, using only body language for communication.

“Fortunately, I was placed in a friendly environment, which Crediton certainly is, under the protection of the most remarkable person, Frank Letch, who gave me the honour to be his wife.

“Finally I made my English language journey and I am determined to help others and encourage them to follow this difficult but very rewarding path.

“In our community school, run by volunteer teachers, we teach not only an academic programme but some practical ideas of how to manage social life, shopping, banking, housing etc. We encourage our students to show their international diversity by taking part in Crediton festivals and celebrations.”

Natalia said she would like “Courier” readers to help spread information about the free English Lessons to “help more people in Crediton and the surrounding area to change their life for better, to make our community even more friendly and safer through understanding and sharing experience.”
