A LORRY and three cars were involved in a road traffic collision on the road from Eggesford Railway Station to Hollow Tree Cross, Chawleigh, the B3042, at about 10.23am this morning, Tuesday, July 17, the road which is currently being used as an unofficial diversion route while the A377 road is closed at Eggesford for highway works.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service was asked to attend by the Ambulance Service.

Fire crews from Chulmleigh, Witheridge and the heavy rescue vehicle from Middlemoor, Exeter as well as a Fire Service operational assurance officer attended.

On arrival the crews confirmed that one heavy goods vehicle had left the carriageway and was leaking fuel.

The driver of the lorry was still within the vehicle with first aid being administered. A further three cars were involved.

The casualty was released from the lorry and conveyed to hospital by ambulance, along with a further casualty from one of the cars.

Firefighters stemmed the fuel leak and made the vehicles safe before leaving the incident in the hands of the Police.

The road was closed for several hours and re-opened at about 4pm.
