WORK has begun on the first new social housing to be built in Crediton, by Mid Devon Council (MDDC), for many years.

The last homes to be built by MDDC, in the town were at Thurlow Close, in the Landscore area, almost three decades ago, in 1986.

The scheme will provide much needed housing for Crediton, with anticipated completion, of 22 houses, towards the end of summer 2013.

The accommodation will include 12 two-bedroomed houses, eight three -bedroomed houses and two two-bedroomed flats.

A "Start on Site" ceremony was held at the Well Parks site for council officials and contractors from Halsall and Taylor Lewis, who enjoyed refreshments afterwards at the nearby Station Tearooms.

Cllr Ray Stanley, Cabinet Member for Housing explained: "This is an exciting time for this authority as it is the first construction of social housing for more than 20 years.

"Our intention is to continue to provide new accommodation for those in need of homes. "In the more distant future, providing funding can be obtained, further brownfield sites will be developed.

He added: "This development is only one of many recent initiatives to help those who live in our properties.

"We are one of the first authorities to start building social houses.

The new properties will be available for social rent to local residents on the housing list and will only be available for total rent from the council and will not form part of a shared rent scheme.

People will not have the option of buying the new properties for the first 15 years.

Crediton resident, Mid Devon District and County Cllr Nick Way said: "It is really good news that this housing development is taking place,

" I am sure it will create a lot of interest for local people on the housing list.

"The development is on the right side of the town for commuting to Exeter and has the added bonus of being on the bus route and near the railway station.

"We will be talking to the District Council concerning the level of rent that people will pay.

"It is important to be in line with other social housing in the town, if possible and I look forward to the development being completed."
