SHOBROOKE is set to celebrate its yearly harvest festival.

The event will take place at St Swithun’s Church between 10am and 4pm on Saturday, September 13.

There will be live music, a dog show and stalls with cakes, bric-a-brac, plants and local produce. There will also be a bar and pop-up cafe.

“Planning is now in full swing for this year’s harvest festival, to be held on Saturday, September 13,” Churchwarden Victoria Leeming said in the Crediton Benefice Community Parish Magazine.

“It promises to be another wonderful day for the whole community to come together and celebrate – all welcome!

“In early August, our church gathered to mark the ancient festival of Lammas, a thanksgiving for the first fruits of the harvest.

“A special focus was placed on giving thanks to local farmers and growers, whose hard work often goes unseen yet sustains us all.”

The day will begin with the blessing of the holy well, the oldest structure in the village, at 10.15am.

The dog show will last from 10.30am to 2.30pm. It costs £2 to enter per dog, per class. The classes will be: child handler, most appealing eyes, golden oldie (over 10 years), musical sit, best condition, biscuit coach, and best in show.

The raffle draw will take place at 2.30pm, teddies will zoom down the church tower at 3pm and the adults and children’s autumn pie competition judging will happen at 3.30pm. Lastly, the auction is scheduled for 4pm.

Only cash will be accepted at the event.

The following day, Sunday, September 14, a harvest songs of praise service will be held at 6pm at St Swithun’s Church to round off the celebrations.

The annual harvest festival, which is usually held on the third weekend of September, raises money for the maintenance of the church.
