CREDITON’S community owned bookshop, The Bookery, is excited to welcome award-winning science communicator Sophie Pavelle in conversation with author and environmental journalist Marianne Brown from 7pm on Friday, June 13.
Sophie presents her newest work “To Have or To Hold”, a thrilling exploration of symbiosis in the natural world that reveals both beauty and darkness in equal measure.
Interviewed by Marianne Brown, author of “The Shetland Way”, they will examine eight remarkable symbiotic relationships struggling to survive our climate and biodiversity crises, to investigate what these bonds can teach us about living together.
They ask crucial questions including: In our relationship with the natural world, are we the parasites? Will we continue to exploit nature's resources, or can we forge a more restorative bond with what remains?
Species living together in symbiosis is no accident – these dynamics evolved. Species form and sever alliances everywhere, from deep within temperate rainforests to the open ocean, quiet tidal pools or chalk grasslands, and nature thrives on relationships as glamorous as they are grotesque and as bizarre as they are engrossing.
Discover how the future of our planet depends on these delicate, powerful relationships that bind all things together. In “ To Have or To Hold”, Sophie relishes the interconnectedness between species and celebrates the relationships that underpin natural environments. She presents nature's frauds, fortune-tellers, misfits and cheaters.
Sophie will be answering questions and signing copies of this and her first book, "Forget Me Not", which was widely praised for encouraging action against climate change and biodiversity loss.
Sophie worked for the Beaver Trust, presenting their award-winning documentary "Beavers Without Borders". An Ambassador for The Wildlife Trusts, she sat on the RSPB England Advisory Committee.
