MEMBERS of Newton St Cyres Art Group were treated to an encaustic wax painting demonstration from visiting artist, Eleanor Tallowin.
Although I had heard of this painting technique, this was the first time that I had ever seen this fascinating and ancient art form demonstrated.
The process itself involves melting pigmented beeswax blocks, in Eleanor’s case on a heated dry-iron and then using the palette created on the iron to “paint” in a sweeping motion on to a substrate.
Further detail was then added with the tip of the iron or a stylus. Eleanor made this look very easy, but I strongly suspect that it is not!
The resulting artworks were stunning and vivid.
Eleanor lives on the edge of the moor and Dartmoor’s wild landscape has significantly influenced her contemporary and exciting work, but her seascapes were equally beautiful.
Our art group regularly has visiting artists, as well as offering workshops, club mornings and exhibiting opportunities for members so please do get in touch if you would like to become a member of this wonderful club: [email protected].
