A DRUNK Polish mum who "tends to drive on the wrong side of the road", has narrowly avoided jail after she crashed head-on into another car badly injuring her son.

Katarzyna Machaj was one-and-a-half times the drink drive limit when she ploughed into a car on the 60mph A377 road between Lapford and Crediton in May.

Exeter magistrates court heard her six year-old son was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to hospital with a laceration to his head.

The two occupants of the other vehicle also needed hospital treatment.

Machaj (31), of Zeal Monachorum, said she had downed two drinks before she went off to buy some groceries for her uncle.

She told police she did not drive very much in England and "has a tendency to go on the wrong side of the road", said prosecutor Hannah Depledge.

Defence lawyer Caroline Salvatore said Machaj spent three days in police custody after the crash and her son was significantly injured and no longer wants to live with her.

Machaj admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving, drink driving and being drunk in charge of a child.

Exeter magistrates jailed her for a total of 24 weeks, suspended for 12 months, banned her from driving for two years and ordered her to pay £213 costs.
