THE third Copplestone Donkey Derby took place on a sunny Saturday in the grounds of Copplestone School.

A total of seven races were held during the afternoon with six children racing on donkeys in each race.

Organised by Copplestone Parent Teacher Association, the Donkey Derby raised more than £1,000 for PTA funds and similar events in 2013 and last year were also successful, with just one wet year, but all raising funds for the PTA to use for the benefit of pupils at the school.

Races, donkeys and the jockeys were sponsored by local businesses or individuals.

A race card was available and bets could be placed on each rider.

Children from Copplestone Primary School acted as volunteer jockeys for the races.

The races were great fun to watch and between races, children not taking part in the races were able to sit on the donkeys.

Simon Archer, chairman, Copplestone PTA, said that the Donkey Derby was his last event as he was standing down from the role, which he had held for three years.

He explained: "Throughout my time I’d like to thank everyone in our fantastic community for supporting all the events that we have produced, from the Proms to the Donkey Derby (people still can’t believe the children race on REAL donkeys) to discos, Auction for Promises and everything in-between.

"With your support over the last three years we have raised an incredible £17,000 of profit that has gone to benefit the children of Copplestone School.

"This money has paid for worthwhile equipment or trips and many other great experiences and has culminated in some exciting new £7,000 play equipment being installed.

"Many thanks also goes to the incredible team of people who’ve worked tirelessly for the PTA and I wish them every success in the future."
