Topsham 0

THE first home game of the 2009/10 season was the first time these two sides had met. Crediton won a tight game scoring two second half tries to seal a well deserved victory over a strong Topsham team.

The home side started the stronger and exerted pressure on the Topsham line but the visitors held firm.

In the second half Crediton were playing down the slope and they used this to good advantage with Jack Zilch, in particular, having a great kicking game at fly half.

Early in the half the home team secured good ball from a maul close to the Topsham line and flanker Jamie Mckenzie did well to force his way over from close range the try was converted by Ollie Avery-Wright.

Soon after with the forwards committing the Topsham defence the ball was spun wide for wing Ed Brady to drive over and once again Ollie Avery – Wright added the extra points.

After 20 minutes of the half, from loose play prop Alex Rodd secured ball at a maul and forced his way over the line for the opening score.

Just before the half time whistle they were rewarded when the ball was moved wide through several pairs of hands and Ollie Down ghosted down the blind side to score from 20 metres for a well deserved team try.

With five minutes remaining it was Crediton who made the game safe with another piece of attacking open rugby.

Flanker Matt Twomey was first to a maul on the Newton Abbot 22 meter line and he did really well to force his way past several attempted tackles to go over near the posts. Ollie Avery – Wright added the extra points.

Newton Abbot were not finished and it was only a fantastic try saving tackle from second row Dan Vanstone that saved a certain score on the final whistle.

AFTER two crushing defeats at the hands of Wellington and Topsham, the coaches were hoping that the boys were going to come out firing on all cylinders.

The deadlock was eventually broken just five minutes before half time when Luke Styles put in a great kick down the touchline, which was chased by Rhett Dart on the right wing.

The ball bounced kindly and Rhett went over for the first try of the game. The conversion was put over by Luke Styles.

Very soon afterwards, Zac Fox capitalised on a mistake from the Newton Abbot wing and picked up the ball on the half way line running the length of the pitch to score in the corner. Luke again doing the honours from wide out on the touchline.

The home team thought at half time that the visitors would crumble, but this did not happen - they scored a try only 10 minutes into the half, which again was beautifully converted by the visitors.

Some anxious moments followed and a drop goal attempt by Luke Styles hit the post and bounced back into play – unfortunately no one was following up.

With five minutes to go Luke again attempted the drop goal and this time he saw the ball sail through the posts. A frantic five minutes then followed before the referee blew the final whistle!

A great team performance and one, which hopefully will give the boys a belief in their own abilities.

A number of players had excellent games but Sam Walters was deservedly named Man of the Match.

Exeter Chiefs 0

CREDITON made it three wins from three this season in a game in which the score does not reveal the whole story.

It was Chiefs who started best, through the strength of their forwards but as the match progressed, Crediton's rucking was far superior, as was the speed and knowhow of the back line.

At half-time the score was 7-0 to Crediton- a try from Nick Moore-Goff following a massive kick from Josh Lee from his own 22.

Crediton's first assault was ruled out as the ball was held up by Chiefs, but Josh made no mistake from the ensuing five metre scrum, converted by Aiden Shearer.

Early in the second half, the lead was extended when Crediton's backs played the ball across the width of the field to Simon Rendell, to make it 12-0.

Stuart Parminter scored the third try, after a strong run by Gareth Dart. Rendell scored again, following play from Rob Somerwill from a ruck.

The final try was scored by Neil Hookway, whose high kick had Chiefs backs in all sorts of trouble- he retrieved it to run in to score giving a convincing final score of 29-0.
