IT is with great sadness that I must report the sadistic destruction of the Poppy Wreath that was laid at the Crediton War Memorial. As far as I am aware the destruction took place sometime from Tuesday, May 11 and Thursday, May 13.

I am grateful to Mr Tony Pike of the Crediton cleansing department for bringing this matter to my attention. The matter has been reported to the police.

It is very sad that as we have just marked the 65th anniversary of the ending of the Second World War in Europe that there are elements in our town who think nothing of desecrating our War Memorial at this poignant time.

I urge the people of Crediton to report any damage or destruction of our fine war monument to the police or any member of the Royal British Legion in Crediton.

The Poppy Wreath has been replaced on the memorial by Mr Arnold Vosper.

Long may the new wreath stay in its rightful place.
