WHAT are the stories about your community that lie just under the surface?

Do you know about any of the events of Crediton in the past or about any of the characters that lived in the same streets where you live?

On Sunday, November 25 at 7.30pm, a multi-media show at the Arts Centre in Crediton will weave together stories of Crediton across the decades using original songs from folk singer Jim Causley along with dramatic letters from real life characters and inspiring visuals.

For the last six months, history enthusiasts and volunteers from Crediton Museum have been busy unearthing their local stories to share with a creative team from Devon’s rural touring scheme, Villages in Action.

Playwrite, Lucy Bell, Jim Causley, sculptor Peter Margerum, actors Charlie Coldfield and Kirsty Cox plus media artist Kate Green will bring Crediton events and characters to life in a multi-media performance with both humour and pathos this Sunday.

Kate explained: “Sharing the stories through song, drama, archive photos, soundscapes, sculpture and visuals is a great way to breath life into local, often forgotten tales.

“With funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, last year we worked in four Devon communities finding and sharing their unique stories.

“Audience members were gripped by the stories conveyed with both comedy and pathos. People have commented that when they go to the cinema or theatre, they see shows about the rest of the world and the Unearth project shares stories about the place where they live and that is an unusual and valuable experience. People have loved the shows."

In addition to the production in Crediton three other communities have had the same treatment - Brentor, Chagford and Buckfstleigh, all with shows in the Autumn.

A website will share the “unearthed” material and the stories will live on and be accessible for anybody interested in finding out about Devon’s rural life of the past.

Tickets for “Crediton Unearthed” on Sunday, November 25 at 7.30pm can be purchased from Crediton Arts Centre. Adults £8, Under 18’s £4.
