THERE is good news that the missing signs at four of the entrances to the town have been replaced.

Crediton Town Council posted on Facebook in February 2025: “You may have noticed that the signs at the entrances to the town have gone missing.

“These have not been removed for maintenance. Unfortunately, it appears that they have been stolen.

“We have contacted Devon County Council and hope to have them replaced as soon as possible.”

It is believed that the signs were taken on or around January 24, 2025.

The signs which went missing were on the A377 east and west of the town, the entrances from Copplestone and Exeter, on the A3072 from Bickleigh and the entrance to the town from Sandford at Forches Cross.

The sign on Higher Road was not taken and remains in place.

The signs read: “Crediton/ St Boniface 680-754/ twinned with Avranches” and also bear the town council seal.

Emily Armitage, Crediton Town Council administration officer, said about the missing signs in February 2025: "We checked that they weren't removed by the county council for any reason so we can only assume they were taken and probably melted down for scrap.

"We told police but there is no CCTV and we are waiting for replacements. It's just a bit sad someone would do this really. All that is left are the two poles sticking up."

It is believed that the metal value of each sign is less than £20 each.

Unfortunately, the cost of replacing the signs is hundreds of pounds which has had to be paid for by Crediton Town Council, ultimately by Crediton residents through their council tax.

It is hoped that the public will remain vigilant to see that the new signs are not stolen.

There has been discussion about inserting tracker devices into the signs.
