SCHOOLS in Crediton have joined together in a major arts project and a display of their creations in a special “pop-up” exhibition opened in the town yesterday, Thursday, April 7.

Pupils from Landscore Primary School have been working on a project using mosaics as well as teaming up with students from Queen Elizabeth’s School’s art and English department to make prints.

Children from Hayward’s Primary School have been using ceramics in their project.

All their creations are now on show with other work in textiles and photography by older people in the town at an exhibition called “A Reason to Stop” at 21 High Street (formerly Gee’s) until April 14.

All the works on show are based on themes relating to Crediton - the locality of the town, its history, architecture, agricultural heritage and annual events.

The exhibition and the workshops to create the art have been facilitated by the Devon Guild of Craftsmen through arts wave devon which encourages access for everyone to creative activities.

arts wave devon is a partnership between Daisi, Dance in Devon, Devon Guild of Craftsmen and Wolf and Water, working with Devon County Council.

arts wave devon projects have taken place across the county during the last three years with the chief aim of involving children and young people, older people and people with disabilities in a variety of hands-on, arts participation opportunities.

Landscore head teacher Gary Read said the project was bringing the whole community together.

It follows on from Landscore’s previous project on World War 1 which culminated in the school organising its own “pop-up” museum in 2014.

“It’s great for the children to work with professional artists, students from QE and older people from the town and, at the same time, learn about Crediton and its history and heritage,” he said.
