REVEREND Alison Richardson led the May 2 service at Crediton Methodist Church and her theme was "The Grace of God".

The family challenge was to show something in our gardens which brought unexpected joy during the pandemic.

We saw photos of a ruby wedding rose, rainbow chard which not only looked pretty but also tasted delicious, tulips, a damson tree and a cherry blossom tree.

In the reading from John, Jesus said: "I am the vine and we the branches. No branch can bear fruit by itself – it must remain in the vine".

Alison said that Jesus Christ is the true vine and God is the vine dresser and we, as the branches, must remain in Him. We must let God touch our hearts and minds by His grace.

We are invited into the presence and awe of God where He demonstrates the extent of His grace towards us. We cannot earn it – God gives us His grace unconditionally. He is merciful, compassionate and kind and forgives us when we repent. By the grace of God we receive healing.

The reading says "remain in Me and I will remain in you".

Alison said we are to ensure that the teaching of Jesus remains in us and we must focus on our relationship with Jesus. As branches need the vine to nourish it, so we need the blessings and grace of God. Amazing Grace how sweet the sound!

The church is closed but services are held on-line.
