THE Crediton Community Fair held on Saturday, July 16 at Newcombes Meadow was a huge success and was enjoyed by young and old alike.

The fair was organised by The Rotary Club of Crediton and included

tug of war demonstrations, seven-a-side rugby, skittles, horse racing games, clowns, face painting, Army Cadets (including camouflage painting), Tae Kwon Do demonstration, bouncy castle, putting, barbecue tent, beer tent, cream teas and cakes and the superb Queen Elizabeth’s School Jazz Band.

This fund raising event was held in support of Rotary charities and in particular the Literacy (Starfish) Programme. For the last three years, the Rotary Club of Crediton has been actively supporting Hayward’s Primary School by providing consultants to help young children with their reading ability.

This programme of help has been an outstanding success. It targets the children who are behind in literacy in the five to seven year age group and gives them intensive one-to-one support to a level where they can manage as independent readers.

The head teacher Emma Summerfield said: “It is vital that this programme continues.

"It has become one of the great success stories of our school.”

On the International front, the Rotary Club of Crediton continues to support the Shelter Box charity (a Shelter Box and tent were on show at the fair) and Rotary Clubs around the world continue to raise substantial sums towards the eradication of polio.

Two young people won prizes at the fair, which have yet to be claimed, Jack won a prize in the Under 16’s skittles organised by the Crediton Tesco store at Wellparks and Caitlin won a prize on Charlie the Clown.
