THROUGHOUT May and June Crediton Community Bookshop is leading The Big Read, an invitation to everyone to join in reading books which will be available free from the bookshop and other local outlets including Crediton Hospital, Crediton Library, Moto Velo, Crediton Coffee Company, Grape & Grain, Nikki B’s, New Valley and Chiddenbrook surgeries, Four Seasons, Stevie B’s and Age Concern with more locations to follow.

Supported by Pan Macmillan and the Crediton Hospital League of Friends, the bookshop team will be distributing hundreds of copies of three titles.

Raven Black by Ann Cleeves; the first novel in the Shetland series (as seen on TV) and winner of the CWA Gold Dagger for Best Crime Novel.

13 Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffiths; first of the comedy classic, bestselling Treehouse series for readers ages 8 to 11.

Captain Cat and the Treasure Map by Sue Mongredien and illustrated by the bestselling Kate Pankhurst, a new laugh out loud story for emerging readers ages 6 to 8.

The idea is to read the books and share them with friends and colleagues, talk about what you liked or didn’t like. You can share your thoughts on social media, by email or just write in the back of the book.

The Big Read culminates with events during Cred Fest 2019. These will include a Special Book Group session and an evening author event with Ann Cleeves, and a Captain Cat children’s party with Sue Mongredien - with special guest, The Gruffalo!

Five children from Cheriton Bishop Primary School, their teacher and headteacher were presented with a prize of 20 books at Crediton Community Bookshop, from the bookshop’s top titles.

During Crediton Community Bookshop’s World Book Day programme staff talked to 3,000 children in 15 local schools about their top titles.

As part of this Cheriton Bishop won the raffle prize of 20 books, which is particularly appropriate as they have a new library.

Headteacher, Alex Waterman said:“ It’s good timing as we have just launched our new library.

”The Parent Teacher Association raised more than £6,000 for the refurbishment.”

As part of the Big Read children in Year 2 at Hayward’s Primary School, Children in Year 4 at Sandford School and Year 4 children at Landscore Primary School also received free books.

Altogether Crediton Community Bookshop has given a book to all 250 Year 2 and Year 4 children at these three schools which is very important as they know that some of these children are never able to buy books.

It is part of the bookshop’s commitment to inspiring Crediton children to read.

Also as part of Crediton Big Read is a Read Me and share scheme where books have been left at various destinations for people to take and read and to share with others.
