A FORMER Chulmleigh College pupil from Morchard Bishop has joined the Royal Air Force.

Orla Fosbrooke, who went to the secondary school between 2019 and 2024, has followed in her sister Emer’s footsteps and become an Advanced Manufacture and Repair Technician.

She has finished the 10-week basic training course at RAF Halton and is now waiting to begin the second phase of her training.

Her role will include manufacturing and repairing parts for aircraft, vehicles and specialist equipment.

“During my time at Chulmleigh, I was unsure of the career path I wanted to pursue until I attended an event in Exeter where I met Royal Air Force recruiters,” said Ms Fosbrooke.

“From that moment, I knew that joining the RAF was the path I was meant to follow. I was particularly inspired by my sister, also a former Chulmleigh College pupil, who became an instructor for Advanced Manufacture and Repair Technicians – the trade I am now entering.”

Ms Fosbrooke said basic training was one of the “most challenging experiences” she has ever faced but found it to be “incredibly rewarding”.

“Throughout training, I developed a wide range of skills, including CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) procedures, weapon handling, basic first aid, and fieldcraft – the latter being a particular highlight,” she continued.

“Graduation day was one of the proudest moments of my life, and sharing that achievement with my family made it even more meaningful.”

Chulmleigh College’s headteacher Neil Payne has fond memories of Ms Fosbrooke’s time at the school.

“We remember Orla as an outgoing and positive pupil whilst at school and I am so pleased to see her doing so well,” he said.

“Orla fronted one of the most memorable college bands during my time at the school – “Tobias and His Disciples” – and I remember how wonderfully they performed in the college on many occasions.”
