WEST Devon Chorale’s Autumn Concert will be held in Crediton Parish Church on Saturday, October 14.

The concert will begin at 7.30pm and the choir will be conducted by its director, Michael Johnson, with Christopher Moore the organist.

Three major choral items will be performed beginning with the festive “Gloria” by Claudio Monteverdi, written in 1631 to celebrate the ending of the plaque in Venice in which a third of the city’s inhabitants died.

This will be followed by the well-known “Beatus Vir”, written by the greatest Venetian composer of the 18th century, Antonio Vivaldi.

Large-scale choruses in this piece contrast with florid solos and duets.

The second half of the concert comprises two works, the short but famous “Crucifixus” by another Venetian, Antonio Lotti and the superb “Missa Brevis” by Zoltan Kodaly.

It was written in Budapest in 1942 when the Nazi-occupied city was under siege from the Russian Army.

Admission to the concert will be by ticket (£8/£3 students, in advance) obtainable by telephoning 01752 776479 or on-line at: www.wegottickets.com/westdevonchorale .

Tickets will be available at £10 at the door.
