IT was the turn of Cheriton Fitzpaine WI members to provide the cake stall at the monthly Parish Market in September. Our members and friends were very generous, and there was not much over at the end of the morning. We raised £276.70 for WI funds.

At our September meeting, we welcomed Charlotte Knipe, from Bovey Tracey, who spoke to us about the Dame Hannah Roberts Trust.

Dame Hannah was the wife of an MP and left a legacy to be used to care for “Poor and Disabled Children”. The Trust, which has centres at Ivybridge and Seal Hayne helps some of the seven per cent of the population who have profound and multiple learning difficulties.

Many have Cerebral Palsy, or have been damaged in infancy by such illnesses as Meningitis.

There is a school for three to 19 year-olds, and a Children’s Home, which also offers respite care when possible, together with 12 supported bungalows on site.

All kinds of activities are available, so that residents and visitors may live a more fulfilled life.

At Seal Hayne, there is a Radio Station run by the young adults, a Hydrotherapy Pool, and also a small Therapy Dog, who is quite lazy and happy to travel on a wheelchair!

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 17, at 2.15pm in the parish hall, when a representative of the Police and Crime Commissioner will be talking to us. Visitors are welcome at a cost of £3.
