THE village of Cheriton Fitzpaine, just five miles from Crediton, is organising a fantastic Flower Festival at St Matthew’s Church in the heart of the village.

It will takes place on Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13, from 10am until 5pm, and on Sunday, May 14 from 1.30pm until 5pm.

The event entitled “A Village in Flowers” was inspired by the great success of an inaugural event held in 2016 when more than 20 village organisations took part.

They aimed to express the character of what each organisation does through unique and colourful flower displays in the church.

Many groups, including the Brownies, the WI, the local walking group, the Garden Club, the Allotment Association and the Carnival Club created displays that reflected their character.

Local residents, aged from eight to 80 years-old, many of them very talented flower arrangers, all lent a hand.

The church was a feast for the senses and the displays even included such unusual items as a walking shoe, a wheelbarrow, vegetables and feathers!

Alice May, church warden and festival organiser, said: “After last year’s success we are planning a much bigger event this month.

“We have invited more groups in the village to take part, including the local primary school and the group working at setting up a community shop.

“As last time, entry will be completely free.  As well as enjoying the flowers, visitors will also be able to try home-made lunches and afternoon teas. These will all be freshly prepared and served by some of the many volunteers who work so hard to make the event a success.”

In 2016 the festival raised more than £1,100. This helped towards the repair of the much-loved church clock, which sits high on the church tower. It had been out of commission due to wear, tear and damage for quite some time.

Many villagers have commented on how wonderful it is to hear it chiming again after so long.

Hazel Norton, also a church warden, added: “We want to welcome everyone, both locals and other visitors, to come and enjoy the festival.

“As you approach the village you can see the church clock tower from a distance.

“Head for it and come and admire our interesting and truly historical church building as well as all the floral displays plus you can enjoy  lunch or afternoon tea.

“It will be a great outing suitable for everyone who loves a drive into the countryside on a spring day.”
