A CREDITON pottery-painting shop is inviting people to take part in painting six murals to be displayed at the town’s railway station.
Great Western Railway has given Paint Pots of Devon £5,000 for the project as part of the Railway 200 celebrations, which mark the 200th anniversary of the modern railway.
The murals will be made up of around 600 ceramic tiles in total. Five will be themed designs which people can paint by numbers, and one will be a collage of paintings featuring what people love about Crediton.
One of the designs will depict Crediton’s trade history relating to the rail network and the transportation of milk, wool, cattle and agricultural goods.
Another will be of the railway station itself, and still another about the Second World War and evacuees coming to the town.
“Don’t miss this chance to leave your mark on our community and celebrate 200 years of railway history together,” said Gemma Jackson of Paint Pots of Devon.
“We have six different murals that you could contribute to. No experience needed – just bring your creativity!”
Ms Jackson estimates the murals will take around five months to complete.
“We hope the addition of the murals will continue to make Crediton station a welcoming and vibrant community asset for all, showcasing the impact the railway has, and continues to have, on the local economy,” said a Great Western Railway spokesperson.
You can paint a tile for free at Paint Pots of Devon at the Creedy Centre on Crediton High Street and Dive In Cafe at Active Crediton (formerly Lords Meadow Leisure Centre).
Tile-painters should not book a table at Paint Pots of Devon’s shop on Saturdays, as these are for pottery-painting customers only.
Every child enrolled in a Crediton primary school or nursery will also get the chance to have their fingerprints incorporated into the project.
