THERE has been a further appeal for better CCTV in Crediton following a break-in at Crediton’s British Red Cross shop.

The break-in occurred between Saturday night (September 19) and 7.45am this morning, Monday, September 21.

Access was gained by breaking a toilet window and then opening a fire exit to the rear of the Crediton High Street shop.

Mrs Gill Pearn, assistant manager, said that it was “disappointing and upsetting” when she opened the shop this morning.

“I found our office chair in the middle of the room and then saw the safe had been forced open.

“There was only a small float in the safe but the damage that has been caused is just a terrible inconvenience.

“It is very disturbing for our volunteers and staff, but fortunately the staff lockers were not broken into on this occasion.

“It really is so much damage for so little money.

“The safe was forced out of the floor and we will have to get another one.”

The British Red Cross shop sustained its last break-in in December 2019 but other charity shops in the town have been broken-into since that time.

The shop was closed this morning (Monday, September 21) to enable Devon and Cornwall Police forensics officers to investigate the break-in.

Daniel Webb of Crediton Coffee Company, who has been campaigning for better CCTV in the town, said that the latest break-in added further weight to the Crediton campaign for better CCTV.

Crediton Town Council says it is trying to co-ordinate better CCTV for the town.
