NETWORK Rail has announced that it will be upgrading the track at a number of locations between Crediton and Barnstaple from October 26 to November 8, which will mean a replacement bus service will operate instead of a rail service.

It says that the works are to provide a smoother, more comfortable journey and to improve reliability on the route.

GWR says that passengers should check the times of buses before travelling as the bus times are likely to be different to the train times.

GWR also says that more time should be allowed for journeys, which will be longer than the train service.

Trains will still operate from Crediton to Exmouth and back.

The replacement buses will use the A377, which passes most of the stations along the line, except for Yeoford, where a shuttle bus service will operate.

GWR says there will be luggage restrictions on replacement buses, i.e. no large luggage, no bikes except folding bikes and no dogs, except assistance dogs.

Pushchairs will be permitted but must be folded and stored as luggage.

In addition, Stagecoach South West will be accepting valid rail tickets on most local services during the two-week period.

Full details can be found on the website: GWR.com .

A new Tarka Line timetable will operate from December 15.

It will include an hourly service throughout the day between Barnstaple and Exeter.

There will also be a new earlier first train to Exeter with an arrival time at Exeter St David’s at 07.31, in line with customer aspirations and an hourly calling pattern throughout the day, including the evening peak.

Newer trains, with air-conditioning, more comfortable seats and accessible toilets are promised.

Longer, more modern trains will replace the Class 143 Pacer trains on the Barnstaple line, giving a 17 per cent increase in seats.
