IN his annual New Year’s Message, the Mayor of Crediton, Cllr Frank Letch MBE, says that Kirtonians should be thankful they live in a tolerant and friendly town, but also raises questions about what the future may bring.

He writes: “This year has flown by highlighting important events international, national and local.

“Those who follow the events abroad cannot but be saddened, dismayed and concerned at the shocking treatment of innocent civilians by heavily armed forces. Should there be a need to help some refugees I hope and trust that Kirtonians can rise to the occasion.

“Nationally the big event, eclipsed by the announcement from Kensington Palace, is still Europe and how do we leave. As negotiations are protracted and difficult I hope that, whatever the deal negotiated, it will not harm our town’s businesses. We must be upbeat and have trust in the skills of our negotiating team. We must look forward to the royal wedding and take this mood forward.

“Locally the town council has been negotiating with Mid Devon District Council over its proposal to sell our council office on the open market and our taking over some of the toilets in town.

“I would like to thank the "Crediton Courier" for its comprehensive coverage of these challenges. Whatever the outcome we shall do our best to ensure that Crediton enjoys the level of service from the Town Council to which it is accustomed.

“I know the Town Councillors will all join me in wishing all Kirtonians a happy, peaceful and successful 2018.

“At this time of looking forward with hope let us remember those who face each day alone, those who go hungry and with substandard accommodation.

“Let us be thankful that we live in a tolerant and friendly town and look forward with optimism to the undoubted challenges for us all of 2018.”
