ONCE again, Lapford Revel’s “Royal” evening rolled out with lots of fun and excitement, the clouds staying away long enough for everyone to enjoy the shortened procession and the events on the village green beside the parish church.
That was the Thursday evening, but the Revel had begun with the Rose and Sweet Pea Show on Tuesday in the Victory Hall ending on Sunday with the Revel Songs of Praise Service in the parish church.
On Thursday, the church bells rang to announce the start of the “Royal” procession from the village car park, past the Old Malt Scoop Inn to the village green beside the parish church.
The Revel Royal party had a throne for the King and Queen on a dais with the attendants sitting on benches on the village green.
Both the King and Queen leave the primary school this term. They were Brady May and Savannah Down, crowned by Barny Cockings and Phoebe Whyte.
Attendants, a pair chosen by each year in the primary school, were Evie Landsell, Bradley Barker, James Campbell-Rogers, Skye Elston, Sam Poole, Kitty Cran, Letheren Down, Emily Passmore, Jasmine Cairns, Eli Tanner, Thomas Gilpin and Izzy O’Callaghan.
This was followed by maypole dancing with Ed Rennie on the melodeon and helping if there was going to be a tangle of ribbons. Their sets included the Lapford Plait which they had devised with Ed.
After that came the sweet scramble on the village green and Winkleigh Morris dancing out in the street.
Savannah’s mum had made her daughter’s gown for Revel Queen, putting the finishing stitches in that morning.
On Friday there was the Revel Fun and Games Evening organised by Yeo Valley Christian Fellowship with the main event being on Saturday in the Victory Hall and the Playing Field with games, dancing, music, parachuting teddy bears, magic, and more music into the evening.
There was a floral display by local organisations in the church and children’s art works around the village.
