A SINGLE vehicle road accident closed the A377 to traffic near Crediton for more than three hours on Monday, May 16.
The accident, involving a dark-coloured Alfa Romeo GTV 20, occurred at about 4pm.
The car first hit a pole carrying a power cable in the hedge between Hookway Cross and Ladds Computers at Downes Corner before crossing both carriageways again and coming to rest on the pavement and verge.
Air bags had activated in the vehicle. Both front wheels had become detached from the vehicle by the time it came to rest.
The male driver was unable to get out of the car. Both Crediton fire crews attended and cut the man from the vehicle.
He was, however, able to walk to a waiting ambulance. The ambulance left the scene just before 5pm.
He was said to have back injuries.
Police closed the A377 to traffic and routes on minor roads in the area were said to be "gridlocked".
Police are investigating the incident.
Western Power attended to deal with the cables on the road. Ladds Computers staff were unable to work due to the lack of power for the rest of the day.
