THERE has been a change of ownership at one of Crediton's long-established businesses.

Steve Nicholls and Emma Cole are in a two-month consultancy and learning period before the full takeover of A J Cox, butchers at 16 High Street, Crediton.

The couple are known in the area as they formerly ran The Lamb Inn at Sandford from 2002 to 2004.

It was while there that they met Phil Eakers, the proprietor of A J Cox, butchers, who supplied the food-lead public house with quality meats.

Phil Eakers has run the business with his wife, Rita for 17 years and as well as himself as a full-time butcher, A J Cox also employs a manager, Andy, who will continue in the role, Pete who is a full-time butcher and three shop sales staff, Liz, Pauline and Elaine.

A J Cox supplies not only customers who call at the shop but also pubs and restaurants, schools, nursing homes and other shops including, for example, Sandford Stores and Bridge Stores, Bow.

The business uses only meats from local farms and is proud that it supports local farmers.

Often a board outside the shop displays the name of the farm which has supplied the meats.

Phil started in the butchery business in Crediton with Dick Packer, while still at school, 40 years ago.

He has now decided to pass over the reins to someone else and said he is "delighted" that Steve and Emma have taken up the challenge.

Phil said Rita will continue to work part-time and he will be available to assist them, if required.

Phil added: "Rita and myself would like to thank our customers over the years for their loyal support, the staff for their loyal support and our suppliers, the local farmers, who are absolutely brilliant.

"We wish Steve and Emma every success for the future."

As well as a wide range of quality meats, A J Cox makes pies and pasties on the premises, as well as burgers and sausages.

Hams are cooked on the premises and meats roasted.

Milk, dairy produce, eggs and other items such as cooking sauces, preserves and other condiments are also available from A J Cox.
